ニート（NEET）とは「Not in Employment, Education or Training」の略で、「職に就いていない、学校機関に所属もしてない、そして就労に向けた具体的な訓練もしていない」若者を指す。
つまり、無職で、学生でもなく、フリーターでもなく、失業者でもない若者のこと。
労働政策研究・研修機構副統括研究員の小杉礼子氏はニートを、以下の四種類に類型化している。
1)ヤンキー（非行）型 反社会的で享楽的。「今が楽しければいい」というタイプ 中卒、高校中退が多い。親も豊かとは言えない。2)ひきこもり型
社会との関係を築けず、こもってしまうタイプ
不登校やひきこもりを体験。人間関係を結ぶのが苦手。3)立ちすくみ（自己実現追求）型
就職を前に考え込んでしまい、行き詰ってしまうタイプ
大卒に多い。就職活動で自分らしい仕事を考えすぎて立ちすくむ。4)つまずき（自信喪失）型
いったんは就職したものの早々に辞め、自信を喪失したタイプ
その後の職探しを躊躇する。
おそらくこの類型化も大きく分ければ、１）と２）３）４）という２つに分けられる。
３）の立ちすくみ型、つまづき型もその類型を経て、結果的には、２）のひきこもり型になることが多いだろう。
